SHAPE Update: Mystery Solved

Revealed: The 30 Day Challenge

We kept you in suspense since last week’s teaser, so here’s the new Bethel staff challenge: a 30 Day Plank Challenge. During the month of May we are going to work to strengthen the core.  This challenge starts you out with a 20 second plank and you will work up to 300 seconds (five minutes).

The plank requires you to simply hold yourself up on the floor with your forearms and toes.   Keep your back flat and hold your core tight. Modified—hold with forearms and knees—still keeping back flat.  If you want to start with 5 or 10 second planks, go for it!  The only difference between Try and Triumph is a little “umph”!

Go here to see a demonstration and to get the plank schedule. Click here for a printable calendar.  And watch for a plank competition at the end of May.

Week 2: Healthy Life Schools Challenge

SHAPE Update: Easy As Pie

Beginners and Intermediates Wanted

You really have to see how easy this is. It’s something everyone can accomplish.

Take a look at the Beginner Training Schedule and the Intermediate Training Schedule for the Miles to Meals 5K on May 26th. They are each six weeks long with very attainable goals.

Training can be on your own, or you will be warmly welcomed to the SHAPE Walk/Run class every Thursday, 4:15 at Prairie Mountain.  They will begin their Couch Potato to 5K training this coming Thursday.

A new Walk/Run class begins this week at Meadow View.  Clair Manley will be leading a group at MV on Wednesdays at 4;30.  They will be following the same training schedule as PM–so you could get in two group workouts a week!!

Pedometer Power

Clear Lake staff wore their pedometers during the Bridgway Run.

Clear Lake staff wore their pedometers during the Bridgeway House 5K for Autism Awareness.

A SHAPE pilot program is underway at Clear Lake, with staff up and moving like never before.

Volunteers were given pedometers to wear and the staff put together 3-4 person groups who track their steps every week. At the end of each week they put their total on a board in the staff room. At the end of the month the top three teams will earn prizes!

The walkers also have the opportunity to put their name in a prize bucket each day that they rack up 10,000 steps, with two names drawn for prizes each week.

SHAPE would like to expand this pilot in the fall, so contact SHAPE Coordinator Nicole Zwink for more information.
