Welcome to Fall!

What a wonderful start to Kindergarten this year! We are having such a great time getting to know your children as they make new friends and learn how to be Irving Tigers. These first few weeks of school we have focused on the basics of manners and friendship. There are a lot of names to learn, so don’t be surprised if your child talks about playing with friends but can’t remember their names yet. Every day is busy with many academic jobs to do as we begin to learn the letters of the alphabet and how to count and write numbers. Next week we will get to explore the tastes of autumn as we sample different apple varieties and have a cool drink of apple cider from local farms.

As a reminder, PTO has sent out order forms for our school fundraiser and Popcorn Day. Please double check the dates for those order forms to be returned to school! PTO is also partnering with Cub Scout Pack 52 this year to assemble birthday boxes to distribute to families in need. You can contribute cake mix (McFarland) or disposable cake pans (Bratland) by dropping them off in the front office or at the classroom.

Welcome to Kindergarten at Irving!

Welcome Irving Families!

With the switch to online registration this year we will be meeting many of our new students for the first time at our Meet the Teacher event on Thursday, August 30th from 4:45-5:30 p.m. Our fabulous Irving PTO will also be hosting a BBQ that evening with food, drinks, and games for everyone to enjoy!

A few tips for the first day of school…

*We will have a sign-in table outside the kindergarten classrooms to make sure each child gets a name tag and a photo of their first day. We will also confirm your child’s transportation plan for the end of the school day before you leave.

*Please make sure your child wears comfortable clothes and shoes. The weather may be hot and we will be out on the playground several times during the day.

*We will have lunch in the cafeteria – exciting! The menu is posted online here and paper copies are available in the front office.

*Kindergarten lines up along the wall across from Jesse’s Memorial Garden by the flag pole at the end of the school day. We teach the children to “let our families come to us” so that children do not become separated from our group in the rush at the end of the day. We will give your child a High 5 to let them know that we see you and they are ready to go home. Don’t worry if you are running late or need extra time to find a parking spot! We typically wait at our line-up space until 2:35 and then go to the front office to keep cool (or dry, or warm, depending on the season!)

*The After School Club, which operates daycare and preschool on the Irving campus, is offering a childcare option for Smart Start. For more information and to contact them directly: Smart Start Irving 2017

We are so very excited to meet all of you and are looking forward to a fantastic school year!

Fall Fun at School

Wow! The busy autumn days are flying by faster than the leaves are falling off the trees!

This Friday, October 27th, our fantastic Irving PTO invites all Irving families to join us for the Monster Mash Bingo Bash from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. There will be hot dogs for purchase, crafts, bingo, dancing, and prizes to win! All proceeds from the Bingo Bash support student activities at our school that are funded through PTO. Hope to see you there!

All next week we will be enjoying five days of fun with “Spirit Days” instead of a traditional costume day on Tuesday, October 31st. Your child can choose to participate in one or all of the Spirit Days to show their Irving Spirit!

Monday – crazy socks day (Don’t have crazy socks? Turn your socks inside out!)

Tuesday – hat day

Wednesday – pajama day (Please make sure pajamas are appropriate for school and the playground!)

Thursday – crazy hair day

Friday – Team spirit/Irving spirit (Favorite team or school colors)

“Fall” Into Kindergarten!

Happy autumn everyone! Just a few quick updates for this week…

Kindergarten is off to a fantastic start and the children have settled in to our daily routine. Each week we are enjoying learning time in the classroom and experiencing new things in Music, P.E., and Library. We also had our first popcorn day of the year! If you would still like to pre-pay for a popcorn bag just send me a note and I can send the PTO signup form home with your child.

Speaking of popcorn….our awesome PTO volunteers are always looking for more helpers. The next popcorn day is Wednesday, October 11th and you can contact PTO to volunteer.

The monthly newsletter for our classroom will be coming home in your child’s folder next week. It has some information about what we’re learning in the month of October and info about various other classroom happenings. Feel free to call, email, or send a note if you have a question about any of the newsletter items.

Square 1 Art Fundraiser

Spring is just around the corner – hooray! Last week we sent your child’s artwork (what we call “the fishy picture”) home for you to preview. We almost feel like we’re on a tropical vacation looking at these awesome colorful fish! If you would like to order additional items featuring your child’s artwork, our PTO has more information for you:

“Square 1 Art fundraising orders are due Wednesday, March 22If ordering online, go to and enter the access code found on the back of the catalogue that was sent home with your student last week. Remember, the class with the most dollars collected per student will get a Classroom Frozen Yogurt Party! This is a great way to support your school and show your child how much you love their artwork. If you have misplaced your catalogue: please email for your student’s code. This annual fundraiser supports the Irving Elementary PTO. Thanks for your participation!”

PTO Skate Party Tomorrow!

Tomorrow night our Irving PTO is hosting a Family Skate Party at Skate World from 6-8pm.  This is a FREE event for our entire Irving Community to celebrate the Fall Fundraiser. Donations are still being accepted and our PTO board will be available at Skate World to take additional donations if you would like to contribute at that time. Families who have already submitted donations will be entered in a drawing to win some Irving Tiger wear.

PTO fundraising directly benefits all of our students here at Irving by paying for field trips, classroom supplies, Arts Attack! curriculum, and much more. We are very grateful for every financial contribution no matter how large or small. You can also contribute via credit card online at

Our First Field Trip!!!

Kindergarten will be taking our first field trip this Friday to see The Magical Moombah performance of Gloria’s Habitat Hotel at the Shedd Institute. We will be departing school at 9:45 and returning by 12:30. This should be a fantastic show for the children and, if weather permits, we’ll eat our sack lunches at a local park before returning to school.

All of our chaperone spaces are full but not to worry – we will be taking another trip to both The Magical Moombah and the City of Eugene Public Works Day in April. Thank you again for your generous support to our Irving PTO which is underwriting the cost of tickets, snack, and transportation to the show. Go Tigers!

Squeezing in a November update!

Wow! The month of November flew by and I am happy to get a few more updates out to you before December begins tomorrow…

THANK YOU to all of our families that participated in our collection for UNICEF this year. Our students raised almost $100 that will provide clean drinking water and medicine to children around the world.

THANK YOU to all of our families that have participated in our PTO fundraising efforts, including Popcorn Days, t-shirts/sweatshirts, and the Direct Donation Drive. That money stays right here at Irving to provide classroom supplies, field trip funding, arts instruction, and so much more. Every little bit helps, so thank you for contributing what you can, no matter how big or small!

Other highlights from this month include our exploration of different water and energy-related concepts in the Discovery Labs, earning a Disco Dance Party in Music, and having a blast completing the Obstacle Course in P.E. with Mr. Hutchison.

December promises to be another jam-packed month with the PTO Family Skate World Party on Thursday, December 3rd, and Parent Conferences from Tuesday, December 8th to Thursday, December 10th. I’m looking forward to seeing you all again soon!

In case you missed it…

Here is the Halloween FAQ that was sent home in the October Newsletter the week of October 5th:

Halloween FAQ:

Can my child dress in costume on Friday, October 30?

Yes. Costumes must meet school dress code guidelines for appropriateness and need to be playground ready. Please be aware of dragging hems and all costume pieces that need to be tied should be double-knotted before coming to school.

Can I send treats to school?

No. We will enjoy eating our regularly scheduled lunch and snack that day.

Will there be a class party?

No. However, our awesome PTO is sponsoring a monster-themed bingo bash that evening that is open to all Irving families.

Families, please understand that our goal here at Irving is for each and every one of our students to feel welcome to come to school every day. Sometimes our youngest students get frightened or confused by people in costume. Some of our students have life-threatening food allergies that make “party” foods just one more thing they can’t eat. I hope you have a wonderful weekend and, as always, please contact me by note, phone, or email if you have a question or concern about activities here at school.

More Kindergarten Updates!

We had another wonderful week in Kindergarten! Thank you to those families who attended Curriculum Night on Wednesday. Don’t worry if you weren’t able to attend – there are many other opportunities coming up for you to get to know other Irving families, either through volunteering for events or just coming by to have a good time! That being said….

From PTO:

Irving Tiger T-Shirts will be available soon for families that are interested in purchasing one for their child. Expect to see an updated size/price list come home soon in your child’s red folder. You can either stop by the office to buy one or send money with your child and a note indicating what size you would like ordered. I will deliver the money to the office and send the t-shirt home in your child’s backpack.

A Fundraising Committee will be meeting for the first time this Monday, September 28 at 6:30 p.m. here at Irving. All parents are welcome to attend to give input into how fundraising for our school can be made more effective through efforts such as a Direct Donation Drive. Contact Athena Shay, PTO Fundraising Chair, at [] or (541) 606-7005 if you have questions or want to be involved.

The first big PTO event of the year, the Monster Mash Bingo Bash, is coming up at the end of October. This is a super fun event that also helps to raise funds for our school. Please contact Donnita Bassinger, PTO Events Chair, at [] or (541) 913-5272 if you are interested in volunteering for special events such as this.

Ongoing PTO volunteer needs include the School Store each Wednesday before school begins, Popcorn Day every other Wednesday morning, and the Square 1 Art fundraiser. These are excellent opportunities to become involved in our school community and have a positive impact for all of our students here at Irving by providing funds for field trips, classroom supplies, and more amazing things than I can even list!

One last housekeeping note:

I have updated the “Book Orders” page and hopefully the revised instructions will fix the glitch that kept so many of our families from ordering through Scholastic online. I was able to manually enter all of the paper orders I received and am pleased to say that we earned 10 free books for our classroom with the size of our order. Thank you!!
