The Smarter Balanced Assessment, often referred to as the “state test”, includes a variety of questions designed to have students apply their knowledge and skills to address real-world problems. On the English Language Arts (ELA) test, students have to use research and writing skills to show their analytical skills and synthesize information. In math, students solve complex problems and then defend their reasoning. There are also multiple-choice questions, like those you and I are familiar with. Some questions also ask students to drag and drop answers into a box, create equations and complete fill-in answers.
