Dear Parents and Families,

This Thursday, December 20th. Irving is having a fun school-wide community building time. Students will be able to sign up to complete a fun activity in another teacher’s classroom around the school for an hour. Ask your kiddo what they did for their chosen activity after Thursday. It should be a wonderful time!

This week, we will be spending time reviewing multiplication and division as well as how to solve these types of questions when they are a part of multi-step word problems.   After winter break, we will be starting our fraction unit that will last for 8 weeks. Today we started an art activity we will be doing for an art competition through the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art’s (UofO’s art museum) NewArt Northwest Kids competition. The art must be about ecosystems, our state, and geography. We will submit kiddos artwork the week after break and will let families know if any of their kiddos art was chosen to be a part of the gallery on the UofO campus.

Margriet Ruurs is the author of over 35 books for children and educators. She has a Master of Education degree from Simon Fraser University. She loves to visit schools and share about writing, becoming a published author, and the importance of a good book and READING! We thought it would be wonderful and extremely powerful for 2nd and 4th grader writers to meet her and learn about publishing books. We have invited her to Irving for a half-day workshop. She will spend an hour with 2nd graders and an hour with 4th graders sharing her books and the power of writing.  The author visit will take place on Friday, January 18, 2019.  Each student will be responsible for bringing in $3.  Please send in $3 by January 11th.  We are very excited to welcome Margriet to Irving.

Friday December 21st will be a PJ day! Jake saved up and spent his Dojo points on a PJ day for the class! In the afternoon we will have a low key celebration. We will have a snack, drink, play a game or two and watch the rest of Polar Express that we started last week to go along with a reading unit. If any families want to donate anything for our party, please send me an email.

Dear Parents and Families,

I’m sorry for the belated post this week. If you have not received your Conference slip, please ask your child for it. They went home in portfolios yesterday. Please let me know ASAP if the time given does not work for you and I will do my best to accommodate.  Also, please let me know if you don’t plan on attending a conference this time. I do select a time for you and it’s nice to know ahead of time if you’re able to make it or not. This is week we began a narrative writing as well as worked on growing in our ability to solve 2×2 digit multiplication math problems. We will be spending most of next week continuing to firm up our double digit multiplication skills as well as beginning to work through long division. It will be a week full of new learning and fun! We keep pushing along with our reading skills. We are working on solidifying our small groups and focusing on different literacy skills (summarizing, main ideas/supporting details, making inferences, making connections, etc).  The students are working so hard. Dear Parents and Families,

I just to make sure you are aware of a research project we have started in class that is Due November 16th. Each student was assigned a Native American Region within the United States and is responsible for creating a report in some form. Students have a packet with the information and criteria in their portfolios.  It can be a poster, Power Point, video, diorama or other visual presentation. If you visit our class blog there are two links on the right side of the page under student links for this project. http://blogs.bethel.k12.or.us/cperrigo

Thank you,

Ms. Perrigo

Dear Parents and Families,
Our first annual “Irving Open House,” will be held this Wednesday October 24th from 5:15-7:00pm. The evening will begin with a dinner from 5:15-6:15 pm followed by a brief “parent talk” from 6:15-6:30. From 6:30-7:00pm we will have a student led “open house” where your kiddo will walk you through the room discussing important information about our classrooms, routines, and expectations. We can’t wait to see you then!

Wednesday, October 31st, we will be making fall lanterns out of jars. Please have your student bring in a clean label-free jar no smaller than a pint but no lager than a quart. We will be decorating them with tissue paper. We will also eat apples and caramel dip and drink apple cider. If anyone is able to donate label free pint or quart sized jars, tissue paper, sliced apples, caramel dip or apple cider that would be wonderful. We also need empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls for a social studies activity. 🙂 Let me know if you already one of these items sitting around that you’d like to donate, or would like to volunteer to donate an item and I can email you one item to send in with your kiddo. Thanks!

This Friday, October 26th, the Irving PTO is hosting a fun family get together at school from 6-8pm. It will be a “Monster Mash Bingo Bash.” Students and families can wear costumes and have fun together as a school community!

I had a parent reach out to a contact she has and put me in touch with someone from Autzen. Our field trip on November 1st WILL include a short tour of Autzen and the kids will get to run through the tunnel and onto the field. For this reason we will get back to the school at 2:25 instead of 1:25. SORRY for the change again and thank you for being understanding. We want to give the kids the best experience we can. I only have 3 chaperones so far. I’m hoping to have twice that many. Please let me know if you’re available.

Room 12 is quickly running out of snack. We typically only provide snack after first recess when we have donations. Thanks to the families who brought in snack im or brought snack in multiple times! Our kids really appreciate it! If you are able to contribute, healthy snacks like crackers, fruit snacks, etc. and you have not yet donated please think about it. It would be much appreciated.

Upcoming Events:

Wednesday October 24th: Irving Open House 5:15-7:00pm

Thursday November 1st: Nearby Nature/Science Factory Field Trip. More Details to Come!

As always, please contact us with any questions or concerns. Have a wonderful week!

Warmly,
Ms.Perrigo

Enjoy our final our engineering project! We made roller coasters for ping pong balls. Each team had to come up with a design plan when given a certain set of materials and criteria. If their original plan didn’t work or if they thought they could make it better then they need to go back and change their plan and model to have a better product. Here are their final products. 🙂

Dear Parents and Families,

I need to make a correction! Our field trip on November 1st is from 8:35-1:25 not 2:25. Just an FYI 4th grade goes on the most field trips of any grade at Irving. I think it’s my fault because I arrange all but one of them. 🙂 We enjoy providing your children with lots of learning experiences within our community and state of Oregon. Five of the six field trips we take are all related to science and social studies. The last one of the year is about fun! Our field trips are the Bethel School Garden Free (Sept. 21st),  Near by Nature/ Science Factory $6.00 (Nov. 1st), State Capital $5.00 (Feb. 7th), Transfer Station /Bring Free (April), Aurora Colony $9.00 (May 24th), and Amazon pool $5.00 (June). We do our best to keep the cost down for the field trips, 2 of them are actually free! The total cost of the rest of the field trips for the year is $25.00. You can pay for your child’s field trips as they come up, or some families prefer to just pay the one time fee of $25.00 and then not have to worry about it for the rest of the school year. Here is the letter that will be going home in Friday folders about the field trip on November 1st.

Warmly,

Ms. Perrigo

Dear Parents,

Our next field trip will be Thursday, November 1st. As part of our study of habitats, wetlands, and the Solar System we will be taking a field trip to Near by Nature and the Science Factory. We will load the bus at 8:30am and arrive back at Irving at 1:25pm. The cost of this field trip is $6.00. We will be eating lunch during the field trip so all students will need to pack a sack lunch. We ask that you do not send any glass containers. If you need the cafeteria to make your child a sack lunch, please let your child’s teacher know by Monday the 29th.

On our fieldtrip, we will be participating in a guided, inter-active nature walk where students will have the opportunity to see up close the animals that live in and around our local ponds and river ecosystems. Students will also participate in a pond dipping activity to observe the creatures that live in the pond ecosystem. Students will then get a chance to visit the Science Factory and planetarium where they will get to enjoy some hands-on science activities and watch a show that will give them an introduction to the current season’s night sky and constellations. We are excited to offer these opportunities to our students. We need two chaperones for every 9 students. Please sign and return the bottom portion of this letter and indicate if you are available to chaperone, or you need a sack lunch from the cafeteria. Please also enclose the $6.00 for the admission fee.

Thank you,

Mrs. Castillo, Ms. Perrigo, Ms. Holliday, & Mrs. Moss
