Ms. Perrigo's Classroom

Dear Parents and Families,

Your child will have a math report coming home in their Friday folder. This report is from our Iready curriculum. We took our second diagnostic test and the report shows how much progress our student has made over the school year and where he or she is as at in the four different areas of math: numbers and operations, algebra and algebraic thinking, measurement and data, and geometry. The Iready program then uses the diagnostic test to design instruction for your child. We do these lessons along with our regular curriculum 3 times a week for 20 minutes. However, your child can also work from home on these lessons to make even more progress. I would love to see students work for at least 15 minutes three times a week at home. I put a link on our blog under student links. It’s the 3rd one form the bottom. Your child already knows his or her user name and password. If you have any questions please let me know.

Warmly,

Ms. Perrigo

Dear Parents & Families,

I hope you all had a wonderful restful break. We’re excited to be back together. This week we will start our “Fraction” unit in math as well as do an author study in writing for our upcoming author visit (see details below).

Margriet Ruurs is the author of over 35 books for children and educators. She has a Master of Education degree from Simon Fraser University. She loves to visit schools and share about writing, becoming a published author, and the importance of a good book and READING! We thought it would be wonderful and extremely powerful for 2nd and 4th grader writers to meet her and learn about publishing books. We have invited her to Irving for a half-day workshop. She will spend an hour with 2nd graders and an hour with 4th graders sharing her books and the power of writing.  The author visit will take place on Friday, January 18, 2019.  Each student will be responsible for bringing in $3.  Please send in $3 by January 11th.  We are very excited to welcome Margriet to Irving.

Room 12 is quickly running out of snack. We typically only provide snack after first recess when we have donations. Thanks to the families who brought in snack at the beginning of the school year! Our class really appreciated it! If you are able to contribute, healthy snacks like crackers, fruit snacks, etc. would be much appreciated.

Upcoming Events:

Wednesday January 9th: Popcorn Day

Wednesday January 16th: PTO Meeting

Friday January 18th: Margriet Ruurs Author Visit

Monday January 21st: No School: Martin Luther King Jr. Day

As always, please contact us with any questions or concerns. Have a wonderful week!

Warmly,

Ms. Perrigo

Dear Parents and Families,

This Thursday, December 20th. Irving is having a fun school-wide community building time. Students will be able to sign up to complete a fun activity in another teacher’s classroom around the school for an hour. Ask your kiddo what they did for their chosen activity after Thursday. It should be a wonderful time!

This week, we will be spending time reviewing multiplication and division as well as how to solve these types of questions when they are a part of multi-step word problems.   After winter break, we will be starting our fraction unit that will last for 8 weeks. Today we started an art activity we will be doing for an art competition through the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art’s (UofO’s art museum) NewArt Northwest Kids competition. The art must be about ecosystems, our state, and geography. We will submit kiddos artwork the week after break and will let families know if any of their kiddos art was chosen to be a part of the gallery on the UofO campus.

Dear Parents and Families,

I’m sorry for the belated post this week. If you have not received your Conference slip, please ask your child for it. They went home in portfolios yesterday. Please let me know ASAP if the time given does not work for you and I will do my best to accommodate.  Also, please let me know if you don’t plan on attending a conference this time. I do select a time for you and it’s nice to know ahead of time if you’re able to make it or not. Thank you!

This is week we began a narrative writing as well as worked on growing in our ability to solve 2×2 digit multiplication math problems. We will be spending most of next week continuing to firm up our double digit multiplication skills as well as beginning to work through long division. It will be a week full of new learning and fun! We keep pushing along with our reading skills. We are working on solidifying our small groups and focusing on different literacy skills (summarizing, main ideas/supporting details, making inferences, making connections, etc).  The students are working so hard.
