Kindergarten

In Kindergarten students are learning about the people in our building. They have learned a song that helps them practice the vocabulary (teacher, secretary, principal, custodian) needed as well as practicing the names of these people. Here are some of the people we know in our building. Practicing name people and their jobs in your family’s home language will help your child improve their English skills as it reinforces the concept in a different way.

Second Grade

The second grade students are learning about families and homes. We finished the first part of our unit and the students read their descriptions of families and what they should do together to our friends in fourth grade. We have great pictures of this activity on our class Instagram. They have learned vocabulary to describe different types of homes (houses, apartments, trailers, duplexes,

etc.) and our next reading will focus on the different types of buildings people have created homes in.

Fourth Grade

The fourth graders are reviewing the verb “be.” They are using a program called Focus on Grammar to target specific skills. Our fourth graders have great oral skills and so we will be utilizing these skills to improve their written skills. Their goal is oral automatic ability so that they can successfully implement the skills into their writing.

Learning to use Voki 2.0

More of our students have learned to create a Voki. Here is a fourth grade example showing us main idea and details.

Here is Damian’s example, here is Jesus and Martin’s example, and here is Alicia’s example.

And here are the first graders explaining why we have seasons.

Learning to use Voki

We are using a new program called Voki. This allows students to record themselves or type out speech and have an avatar present the information for them. Here is second grade’s first one, we used the avatar to practice the conditional form.

Videos!

Phew…it’s been a busy spring! We have been so busy in ELD that I have forgotten to post updates. I am hoping that these videos of our students will make up for it. First – Fifth grade are working on multiple mini-projects connected to the story The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark. These videos are the end product of a quick write about what their owls do on a regular basis. The first and second graders wrote about their owls (to practice third person present tense) while the third – fifth graders wrote as their owls but told about what their days used to be like. The videos can all be found the video pages or by clicking the link for the grade here:

George Washington Carver

In third and fourth grade we have been working on how to create a paragraph response to a prompt. The students read a short passage about George Washington Carver (an amazing African-American botanist and inventor) and then were asked to respond to the prompt, “Should George Washington Carver be put on the dollar bill?” All of the students had an opinion on this but the skill they need is to be able to defend their claim with evidence. The third and fourth graders have worked hard on this new skill. They have used outlines and editing processes to be able to craft their paragraphs and I look forward to taping them and posting them for you later this week.
