The Influential Person Wax Museum sadly cannot happen as it has in the past, obviously.  We would still like to recognize the work students were able to accomplish before school closed; so we would love to give students the option to share their costume in a slide show format.  Students may include all or part of their costume, scrapbook, and/or essay in a photo.  Please be sure to include the name of the Influential Person they are representing.

This is completely optional, and will be managed by a group of parents.  If your child has their costume prepared, and would like to share their photo, please email the photo to Beth Martinez:

Beth Martinez:  tatefin09@gmail.com

Please have photos submitted no later than June 1.

Thank you!  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

Weekly Meme Round-Up: Time for a Vacation — ClassTagNever in my wildest dreams did I think I would be composing my blog post/newsletter while trying to help students learn at home.  This has to be the craziest time in my 31 year career in teaching…what a way to end this school year!

This week teachers are being asked to assess student learning.  Of course, we are always doing that in one way or another, but this week we are supposed to see work from each student.  I know many of you have established your own routines, and are working well using your own materials, and some are combining Bethel materials with your own.  Some are using Bethel materials exclusively.  I am flexible!  Use what works for you.

I will just need evidence of learning in math and literacy this week.  Feel free to do Google Classroom assignments and turn in; send pictures or files showing student work; or talk with me during Zoom office hours on Wednesday or Friday this week at 2:00.  Please connect with me on Class Dojo if none of these methods work for you and we will figure it out.

Remember, iReady is a great option for math work, as well as continuing student learning, since the program is set up to teach students new skills.   Last week five students worked in iReady Online from our classroom, and three students really put in a significant amount of time.  If your kiddo hasn’t worked in iReady for a while, now may be the time to put it back in the rotation of activities.  To log in to iReady,  students can access Clever through our classroom blog, under the math tab, or go to the Clever icon underneath the Distance Learning activities on the Bethel Website.  Students will enter bsdstudentnumber for the username, and studentnumber for the password.

Thanks for all you are doing to help your kids learn at home.  I know it isn’t easy, and we are all in different places with this process.  If I can help in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out.  Class Dojo is the best way to reach me.

TIME for Kids…Free Online Reading Opportunity

Dear Families,

If you would like a free subscription to  TIME for Kids you can click on the link below and sign up. TIME for Kids is making it free, now, through the end of the school year for all students.  After that, you may have to unsubscribe so you are not charged.

With many kids now being on devices, this is something you may decide is not something for your child, especially if you have books readily available.  This is a good opportunity however,  to focus in on some non-fiction reading.

Time for Kids Free!

News for March 13, 2020

There’s lots of news!

Please stay updated through the Bethel Website to know the latest regarding our schools and the Coronavirus.  I am cleaning the desks, tables, and doorknobs daily.  We are emphasizing hand washing.  Thank you for keeping sick kids home.  I know many of you have been very careful in light of the current situation.  Because of recent developments, many events at school have been cancelled or will be rescheduled.  The Book Fair next week is cancelled, as is Literacy Night.  Our field trip to the Eugene Symphony will be rescheduled.

Iditaread!  The race is on…we have a small contingent of students faithfully turning in their reading tickets.  Thank you!  We can use some help…it’s good for everyone to commit to signing off on 20 minutes a night of reading.  This is one thing that is a certain indicator of success in school! The pink packets were sent home on Monday.

Thank you to all the fourth grade families for supporting our Where-What projects.  I was so impressed with the effort kids put into their papers and project boards.  Students went above and beyond!

Fourth grade families, thank you also for the generous donations of Hershey bars for our fractions lessons.  We have had two candy lessons about fractions, and will have one or two more because of all the donations!  It’s been fun to include some tasty treats with our learning.

SNACKS.  Kids really need a mid-morning snack.  Because just a few families have been donating, I am asking that all kids who would like a snack to bring their own snack each day.  Please send fruit, veggies, crackers, granola, or healthy cereal. If you would like to continue donating, it is much appreciated.

Welcome back families!

It was a sleepy start for most getting back to class this week.  Teacher included!  Even though we all were a bit tired, we still managed to set goals, share winter break experiences, and work on reading, math and writing.

Students earned an electronics party!  Our class goal was to have everyone in class at the Leader level or beyond on our Super Improvers charts.  Our Super Improver charts are a way to recognize student appropriate behavior and improvement.  Students “climb” the Super Improvers chart by filling the chart at each level.  There are 10 levels on our Super Improvers wall; students that complete the entire Super Improvers wall will earn a place on the “Living Legends” board in our classroom.

Projects for fourth and fifth graders are getting started!  Watch for more information in next week’s Friday Folder.

Bethel School District would like to hear from you.  You are  invited to share your thoughts and ideas about how to spend increased school funding to better support your child.

Bethel will receive increased school funding as promised through Oregon’s Student Success Act.  As part of the planning and budgeting process, we are seeking input from families’ perspectives. Your input is valuable.

The meetings are January 9th and 14th (you only need to attend one), 6:00-7:45 in the Willamette High School cafeteria.

The District will provide free child care and translation services. Please RSVP for child care by contacting Renee at 541-689-3280 ext. 2003 or renee.brolin@bethel.k12.or.us.

What a week!  With only three days we still managed to have a Pillar Assembly, a counselor lesson, a fire drill, and a lesson from the Sustainable Schools team.  Speaking of Sustainable Schools, we are fortunate to have Ms. Tami and Ms. Meadow in our classroom every other week to teach us important lessons about the environment.  Using a variety of activities, the team helps our students understand the importance of taking care of our environment.

Conferences are next week.  I look forward to sharing the success of your child with you!  We will talk about progress as well as areas to focus on for improvement.  Please come with any questions you have about our classroom, our curriculum, and anything about school.  I believe the way we can best serve your kiddo is by working together, and I value your insight and ideas.  If you are unsure about your conference time, please contact the office or myself.  It will be great to meet with you!

Thank you if you participated in the Pie Fundraiser.  It was a huge success!  Please remember to pick up your order in the Irving Parking lot near the new gym after school on Wednesday.  Pick up will be from 2:30-6:00 pm.  Thank you PTO!

We are also raising money for our Irving Cares  fund.  The coin drive is happening in classrooms now.  We’ve had at least 4 students contribute change to the cause.  Thanks for your help and support.

Great lessons with Ms. E.J.!

Fourth and fifth grade projects are beginning!  Students have chosen their topic or person, depending on their grade level.  Books are assigned.  The books will stay at school; each teacher will manage the project a bit differently.  My fourth grade students have begun reading their book in class.  I am excited about their topics, and I hope they are too!

The Food Drive is on!  We have already had some donations from families in our classroom.  Thank you!  All Irving Families are invited to help us collect non-perishable food items for families in need from November 18th-December 11th.  There is a Food For Lane County barrel located in the office for all of your food donations.

Watch for the notice with your conference schedule on it in this “Friday Folder.”  I look forward to meeting with you and discussing your child’s progress.  Conferences are scheduled for December 4th and 5th.

OBOB is on!  Meetings are held every Monday in the library before school.

Big projects begin soon!  Both fourth and fifth graders will choose the topic for their projects on Monday, November 18.  This week all students had a chance to peruse the book selections, and hopefully this will help them narrow their choices.  After the choices are made, the fun begins!  Students will begin reading and researching at school.  They will need to create a poster for fourth grade, and a scrapbook for fifth grade at home.  Please refer to the pages that were sent home earlier for more detail, or let me know if you need another copy.

Students continue to learn about the brain during our Executive Functioning classes led by Ms. Rachel Moore, our Speech/Language Pathologist.
