News for March 13, 2020

There’s lots of news!

Please stay updated through the Bethel Website to know the latest regarding our schools and the Coronavirus.  I am cleaning the desks, tables, and doorknobs daily.  We are emphasizing hand washing.  Thank you for keeping sick kids home.  I know many of you have been very careful in light of the current situation.  Because of recent developments, many events at school have been cancelled or will be rescheduled.  The Book Fair next week is cancelled, as is Literacy Night.  Our field trip to the Eugene Symphony will be rescheduled.

Iditaread!  The race is on…we have a small contingent of students faithfully turning in their reading tickets.  Thank you!  We can use some help…it’s good for everyone to commit to signing off on 20 minutes a night of reading.  This is one thing that is a certain indicator of success in school! The pink packets were sent home on Monday.

Thank you to all the fourth grade families for supporting our Where-What projects.  I was so impressed with the effort kids put into their papers and project boards.  Students went above and beyond!

Fourth grade families, thank you also for the generous donations of Hershey bars for our fractions lessons.  We have had two candy lessons about fractions, and will have one or two more because of all the donations!  It’s been fun to include some tasty treats with our learning.

SNACKS.  Kids really need a mid-morning snack.  Because just a few families have been donating, I am asking that all kids who would like a snack to bring their own snack each day.  Please send fruit, veggies, crackers, granola, or healthy cereal. If you would like to continue donating, it is much appreciated.

News for November 27, 2019

What a week!  With only three days we still managed to have a Pillar Assembly, a counselor lesson, a fire drill, and a lesson from the Sustainable Schools team.  Speaking of Sustainable Schools, we are fortunate to have Ms. Tami and Ms. Meadow in our classroom every other week to teach us important lessons about the environment.  Using a variety of activities, the team helps our students understand the importance of taking care of our environment.

Conferences are next week.  I look forward to sharing the success of your child with you!  We will talk about progress as well as areas to focus on for improvement.  Please come with any questions you have about our classroom, our curriculum, and anything about school.  I believe the way we can best serve your kiddo is by working together, and I value your insight and ideas.  If you are unsure about your conference time, please contact the office or myself.  It will be great to meet with you!

Thank you if you participated in the Pie Fundraiser.  It was a huge success!  Please remember to pick up your order in the Irving Parking lot near the new gym after school on Wednesday.  Pick up will be from 2:30-6:00 pm.  Thank you PTO!

We are also raising money for our Irving Cares  fund.  The coin drive is happening in classrooms now.  We’ve had at least 4 students contribute change to the cause.  Thanks for your help and support.

Great lessons with Ms. E.J.!

News for November 15, 2019

OBOB is on!  Meetings are held every Monday in the library before school.

Big projects begin soon!  Both fourth and fifth graders will choose the topic for their projects on Monday, November 18.  This week all students had a chance to peruse the book selections, and hopefully this will help them narrow their choices.  After the choices are made, the fun begins!  Students will begin reading and researching at school.  They will need to create a poster for fourth grade, and a scrapbook for fifth grade at home.  Please refer to the pages that were sent home earlier for more detail, or let me know if you need another copy.

Students continue to learn about the brain during our Executive Functioning classes led by Ms. Rachel Moore, our Speech/Language Pathologist.

News for November 8, 2019

You may have noticed certificates with a card with 10 stickers attached in your child’s Friday Folder occasionally.  These signify that your child has moved up a level on our Super Improvers chart.  We have a chart in our classroom with multiple levels, beginning at Rookie and ending at Living Legend.  As students improve or do something positive in class they can be recognized on their Super Improvers card.  This means they earn a sticker; ten stickers mean they move up to the next level.  Students who make it to the top of the chart, “Living Legend,” earn a picture on our classroom wall and the recognition of being an amazing citizen of our classroom.

Thanks to our PTO and Mrs. Courogen, we have access to an online reading program called “Read Live.”  We would like to see more students take part in this fantastic program, but we need parent help.   We will need parent volunteers to monitor students as they work on the program.   We need volunteers from 9:45-10:15 daily.  If you are interested in helping, contact me through Class Dojo.

Students made amazing artwork last week during our second Arts Attack.  Thanks to Amy VanDyke and Susan Williams for organizing our activity.

News for October 25, 2019

This week we tried to get back to a regular schedule.  Bus evacuation and Open House changed that a bit.  We did do some amazing self portraits and Bio-Poems that were on display at Open House.  Our first Arts Attack was Thursday!

Thanks to all the families who could make it to Tiger Open House.  I love our new format, with students leading their guests through the evening.  I hope you like it too.  If you weren’t able to make it I placed the information you would have received in the Friday Folder today.  There are a couple of important items. First, the “flip book” contains all the pertinent information about our classroom, and important dates throughout the school year.  It conveniently has magnets so you can keep it on the fridge if that works for you. 🙂 Also important is the page describing the big fourth and fifth grade projects for this year.  Please look that over and feel free to ask any questions you have.  One question you may have if you are a fourth grader hopefully I can answer here. The Gallery Walk Project and the What-Where Project are one and the same.  Apparently the project has two names!

Thank you to the families who help with homework.  I know those Greg Tang math pages are a killer!  We will start working them together in class.  As long as students are attempting, and showing their thinking in their attempt, it will count as completed. I am sending home notes about incomplete homework on brightly colored paper.  Any assistance in getting homework in is appreciated.  Homework is meant to help kids with responsibility as well as practicing foundational skills at home in reading, math and spelling.

IMPORTANT!!  It is time for kids to earn their Chromebook Licenses.  Part of this process is proving in class that they can be responsible, and follow the guidelines for using Chromebooks at school.  The other part is the signed contract, which needs to be signed by both student and parent.  Final deadline for technology use without a license will be Oct. 25.

The crazy schedule continues!  Field trips have changed our usual schedule, but it’s been fun!  We have had limited regular reading and math due to classes visiting the Bethel Farm.  This has allowed us to finish our District Writing Assessment and do a couple of art activities.  Students are also working in their Ocean Biome books.

Farm trip pictures!

We have had a very unusual week with Health Screening, Picture Day, and an Inservice day on Friday changing up our routines.  Students are working on their Bethel Writing Assessment and self-portraits.  We also continued work on empathy with focusing on listening with attention.

The Hatfield Science Center was tons of fun with learning as well!  We also had beautiful weather for our time at Agate Beach.  Thanks to all the chaperones who made this great day possible.

We have another field trip on Monday!  We will travel to the Bethel Farm.  We will leave Irving at 9:30 and return back at 1:00.  Remember to have students dress in layers with a jacket and good walking shoes.  Also don’t forget that lunch if you are bringing one from home.

News for September 13, 2019

It’s been a good week!  Students are quickly settling into classroom routines and expectations.  This week in homeroom we worked on writing an “Important Thing About Me” paragraph, and we made graphs using data about our class, collected in our classroom.  In fourth grade reading and math, we worked on vocabulary and story structure, and we are reviewing place value.

At the beginning of the school year we will focus on the rules and expectations at Irving. Our school rules are:

Be Safe

Be Respectful

Be a Self Manager

All classroom expectations fall under these three main categories, but we do have specific rules for our classroom.  They are:

  1.  Follow Directions Quickly
  2. Raise Your Hand for Permission to Speak
  3. Raise Your Hand for Permission to Leave your Seat
  4. Make Smart Choices
  5. Keep Your Dear Teacher Happy

Our classroom behaviors will be tracked through the program Class Dojo.   Please check it out! If you haven’t joined Class Dojo yet,  look for a paper with more information included in this Friday folder that is specifically for your child. It has information regarding signing up to see how your child is doing in class. You can also see updates about our room, as well as a messaging section. I have already received messages from students and families! Here is a link to the general website if you’d like to see more:    Class Dojo!

Book Fair next week!  This is an important fundraiser for our library, so if you are able, come on by and take a look at the selection for purchase.  The Book Fair will be open before and after school, also during the first recess for 4-5.

5th graders!  Bike safety is coming up soon.  This special program for 5th graders requires a signed form that was sent home earlier this week.  The back of the form must be filled out as well.   There was more detailed information in the letter sent home earlier.  Forms need to be turned in no later that Friday the 13th.

We have a field trip scheduled!  October 4 we will travel to Newport and visit the Mark Hatfield Science Center and the beach.  We will leave early that morning, at 7:40, and return late, at 4:00, so make transportation plans.  The cost is $6.50.  Thank you to those who have already sent in your money.

Snacks:  I believe snacks really help our kids concentrate and do their best during the school day.  We are asking students bring their own snacks if they would like to have one.  Different classrooms will handle this differently.  My fourth grade reading and math group  will have a snack time available right after recess.
