We had 16 players in 4 quads on February 9th. Ben Kurtz went 3-0 to win the top quad. Yet another 2-way tie in Quad 2, this time with Aidan Cagle and Zayne Harrelson.  Max Murphy and Owen Laird both went 3-0 to win Quads 3 and 4, respectively.  Sophie and Luis representing El Camino del Rio/River Road Elementary did an amazing job in their first tournament handling both notation and clock for the first time.

Don’t forget about the K-12 OSCF Championships in Seaside coming up on April 24th and 25th!
To qualify you need:
1) one OSCF qualifier (like one of the Bethel Quads)
2) at least 8 NWSRS rated matches this school year (you get 3 at every quad)
3) at least 15 NWSRS total rated matches over your scholastic career

Let me know if you need additional games and we will try to arrange it between rounds or after your quad is complete.

Deja vu again as we had 18 players in 3 quads and a swiss 6 at the January Quads. Will Ravn went 3-0 in the top quad again. Troy Amburn found himself again in a 2-way tie in Quad 2, this time with Ben Kurtz.  Sam Farley came out on top again in Quad 3 while Dylan Myrick won the Swiss 6.

Don’t forget about the K-12  Chess for Success Lane/Douglas county Region 17 tournament on Feb. 22nd.  It’s the qualifier for their March championship in Portland.  Deadline to register for the cheapest price ($25) is Feb. 8th and then it goes up each week.  No on-site registration for this tournament. 18 players came together in 3 quads and a swiss 6 on December 15th.  The winners were: Kael Rodine and Hughel Story (2-way tied in Quad 4); Sam Farley (Quad 3/Swiss 6); Troy Amburn and Brandon Young (2-way tied in Quad 2) and Will Ravn earned the only perfect 3.0 score of the day in Quad 1.

After getting shut out in quad #1 in his first Bethel quad as a 5th grader six years ago, Owen McCoy swept the top quad in what will be his last one for awhile since his family is moving to Virginia.  Other quad winners for November were: Brian Schartz (Q2); 2-way tie in Quad #3 between Brandon Young and Liam Priest; Benjamin Varro (Q4); Ridic Ferrand (Q5); 2-way tie in Quad #6 between Manny Two Crows and Max Murphy; Jeff Rodine (Q7); Kael Rodine (Q8); and Zeke Howard (Q9).

From a record high number of quads to a record low.  It was not unexpected.  After the state OSCF meet in Seaside, many scholastic chess clubs shut down for the year.  We’ll keep on going into June.  Last month’s winners were: Hung Le (Q1), Kevin McCoy (Q2) and Aidan Cagle (Q3).

We hit 10 quads again in March to tie November’s record!  The winners were: Will Ravn (Q1), Phil Schapker and Owen Young-Flynn (Q2 tie),Liam Priest (Q3), Maren Bartlog (Q4), Eli Brenn (Q5), Kierra Fenner (Q6), Eli Casper (Q7), Kieran Priest and Kai Wennerstrom (Q8 tie), Ridic Ferrand (Q9) and a three way time in Q10 with Sasha Riddle, Leslie Trent and Ryan Weir.
