2015PCC-sm

WHS competed well at the OHSCTA championship at PCC although the teams didn’t bring home any more hardware for the trophy case.  Part of the reason for the shutout was having 6 seniors graduate from last year’s varsity team and the fact we moved from 5A to 6A.  With only two seniors on this year’s varsity team (Owen Young-Flynn and Brendon Sevey) and two on JV (Keyshawn Hay and David Ehlen), this trip to state was a building step for future successes. 12 of the 16 students will be returning next year to help build WHS back into a chess powerhouse.  Of the 12 returning, five were 9th graders and one each from 7th and 8th grades.

Shane Wilder, 8th grader from Meadow View, was WHS’s alternate this year at state and played in the Individual section.  He had WHS’s highest score of 3.5 (3 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss) to bring home a 2nd place trophy.  The only other WHS player to score 3 or more points was Owen Young-Flynn (1349 rating) with 3 points (3 wins and 2 losses).  One of his wins was an upset of Wilson’s Nathan Jewel (rated 1564).   If there had been a spirit award, WHS would have won first place.  They represented Wil-Hi in fine fashion providing some levity to the meet as well as leading the chorus of applause as their competitors received their awards.  A big special thanks to Lori Loy and Marc Alpers for helping with the driving and sharing their kids with the chess team!

Congratulations to the WHS Chess teams for wrapping up the Midwestern Chess competition for the year.  WHS varsity and JV team both finished 2nd in the Midwestern chess league with their only losses coming to the first place finishers.  Lowden Hansen (3rd board) was the only WHS player to earn the MWL first team honors while Evan Clark (4th board) received an honorable mention.

Thanks to all for coming out to B-bay for 8th grade orientation and the bughouse extravaganza!  There were about a dozen 8th graders and few younger siblings that showed interest in WHS Chess!

Remember that any Bethel student is welcome to join us after school on Wednesdays in room 16 from 3:30 to 5:30 pm.
