The Scholastic Summer Challenge is a free reading program dedicated to stopping  the “Summer Slide” and encouraging kids to read more books this summer.  The Summer Challenge motivates kids to log the minutes they spend reading as they earn cool rewards and Read for the World Record.  Click the image below to sign up!

Looking for ways to keep your child learning this summer?  Research shows students who don’t read and learn over the summer actually lose some of the knowledge gained in the previous year.  To maintain or build new skills, try some of the links  below.  Also check out the “Internet Resources” tab on this site as well as Bethel School District Educational Links.

Hey 5th graders,

Discover the value of Oregon’s Forests, the types of human behaviors that threaten them and how you can help prevent those wildfires.   After completing ALL the activities you will be awarded a Certificate of Completion, KOG Ranger t-shirt, and patch.    Click on the following link to get started: KOG Ranger Program.

In addition, to helping keep Oregon green, you can receive extra credit in Science by showing your Certificate of Completion to your teacher.

In class this week, we are learning about figurative language.  These concepts are often difficult for 5th graders to master.

I’ve added several links to figurative language games, flashcards, and quizzes to provide students extra practice at home.  Several mini-laptops are also available during recess for students who don’t have internet access at home.

The new figurative language page can be accessed by selecting the “Website” tab  above and then hovering over “Reading” or you can use this shortcut:  Figurative Language Links

Please encourage your child to practice figurative language to help prepare them for the state reading test they’ll be taking this year.

Dear Parents,

This year, we will be using in our classroom. SpellingCity is a website that helps students learn their weekly spelling and vocabulary words while having fun at the same time.

As a teacher, I will put up my weekly spelling lists on VocabularySpellingCity and your children can review the words, and play spelling and vocabulary games with their words to reinforce the learning process.

Here’s how to help your child master his or her spelling and vocabulary words:
Simply go to to see how the site works. To get started, click on “Sample Lists” and choose any list you like. Then try the Teach Me, Test Me, or Play A Game link.

You can find our class’ spelling lists by using the Find A List feature and searching for my name, Theresa Haley, or you can go directly to my SpellingCity homepage at You can bookmark this URL on your computer to make it easy for your child to access the class’ word lists!

Many kids enjoy building their spelling skills with Spelling City. Please encourage your children to spend about twenty minutes, two nights in a row before their weekly test. Let’s work together as a team to ensure that your child becomes an independent, lifelong learner.
