Can you believe it’s nearly the end of the school year?  The fifth grade field trip, Friday, May 24th, 2019 will be here before you know it.  We are excited to be going once again to Newport, Oregon.  Students need to arrive at school and meet in their classrooms at 6:30 a.m.  The bus leaves at 6:45.  Late arrivals will miss the bus.  Buses will return to the school around 3:45 p.m.  Students will need to be picked up or they will need to make arrangements with parents/guardians to walk home if they live close to the school.

Mr. McKenzie  has applied for a grant from the Bandon Submarine Cable Council (BSCC).   In the past, this grant has allowed our 5th graders to experience a 2-hour ocean cruise with Marine Discovery Tours.  Malabon has been lucky enough to join this classroom on the ocean for the past 20 years and we are hopeful that we will be awarded this grant again this year.    We have always found Marine Discovery Tours to have the highest quality program for safety and education.  After we bottom trawl and plankton tow, students will see the plant and animal life first hand and enjoy the magic of video microscopy. Visiting the wheelhouse and learning about navigational technology on this large, comfortable boat makes this a special field trip! The beautiful estuary is waiting if the ocean is too rough, so students will get a guaranteed ride.

In addition to the boating experience, we will also be treated to two classes at the Marine Hatfield Science Center. One class will be Animal Adaptations and the other will be Squid Dissection.  Both are hands on and will explore topics we have been studying in our classroom.

Students will need to bring a lunch or order one from the school.  They can place lunch orders through their teachers.  Also, students are allowed to bring electronics for the bus only,  school appropriate games and applications please!  We will be spending half of the time outdoors, so please be sure your student brings a coat or jacket.

As you can see, we are excited about this field trip!  Adults chaperones must plan on paying $24 for the boat ride, fill out the on-line volunteer form, have clearance through the office, and must not smoke for the duration of the trip.  (Click here to fill out the required volunteer form.)  Space on the bus and boat for parents/guardians is limited.  There is room for only 11 adult volunteers.   Check with your child’s teacher,  if you are interested in accompanying your child.

AYE, AYE Mates,

Mrs. Haley
